What size heat pump should I get for my home?
There are many factors to consider such as the amount of square feet in your home, the number and type of windows, the type of roof, is the home exposed to sun or under shade from trees. A general rule of thumb is 600 square feet per ton of cooling but call us for a free consultation and an exact quote.

Which direction should my ceiling fans operate?
In the summertime you want the air to blow downward, so make sure the blades are spinning counter-clockwise. In cooler weather, switch the direction so the blades are spinning clockwise and run the fan on low speed. This will pull cool air upward, mixing with the warmer air at the ceiling and pushing that warm air down the walls and into the interior of the room.

How do I unfreeze my air conditioning unit?
Turn the heat/cool switch to off and turn the fan to on. This will thaw out the equipment. A frozen unit is indicative of a dirty filter, low refrigerant (Freon) level, or a faulty fan. Should I turn my air conditioner off when I leave the house for the day?
It's better to set the thermostat at a higher temperature when you leave for prolonged periods. When you return and re-set the thermostat to the level you're comfortable with, the air conditioner won't have to work as hard to cool the house down by a few degrees. Programmable thermostats are ideal for this task and help save you money.

The humidity in my house is always high. What causes this?
Check that the condensate drain is not clogged. If the unit is running short cycles, it will not be as effective at removing humidity. This can be adjusted in the thermostat by increasing the differential setting to a higher temperature.

What should I set my thermostat at for maximum savings?
As much as 50% of a home's energy bill comes from heating and cooling, so keeping your thermostat set properly can mean big savings on your energy costs. Most of the energy costs in Florida are spent in the hot summer months keeping your home cool. Try keeping the thermostat at 78-80 degrees F. For every degree the thermostat is raised, you save between 4-8% on your monthly energy bill.

How often should I change the air conditioning filter?
It depends on the amount of traffic in the house, whether you have inside pets, if you smoke, and what other pollutants are inside. On average, the filter should be changed every 30 days to prevent the blower motor from overworking and the evaporator coil from freezing up.

What is SEER?
SEER is an acronym of Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is a measure of seasonal or annual efficiency of a central air conditioner or air conditioning heat pump. Units with higher SEER ratings operate more efficiently, but don't necessarily cool your house faster. You can expect to save 5% on your energy costs for every additional SEER point in replacement equipment.

How do I know if I should replace my air conditioning system?
If your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old, your home has excess humidity, you have hot or cold spots in your house, or if the system is noisy, you should call us for a free evaluation.
